Friction Stir Welding: What it is

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a type of friction welding at the solid-state in which the material to be welded has not reached the melting temperature.

It is an innovative process that can improve mechanical strength by 15-20%, energy-saving by 30-40%, providing greater processing precision, a considerable increase in the fatigue life of the joint and use ductility for the hybrid joining of different alloys.

A particular tool penetrates into the material, generates heat by friction and performs a mixing action, thus creating a metallic continuity similar to that obtained with classic melting procedures and allows joining the two pieces. The temperature reached does not allow the material to melt, but only to reach a viscous-plastic state thus avoiding a host of problems such as porosity, gas inclusions, formation of cracks by solidification.

FSW is mainly used to join aluminum, titanium and magnesium alloys which are otherwise difficult to weld using other techniques.

Friction Stir Welding Simulation: How it works

DEFORM, friction stir welding simulation software manufactured by the American SFTC – Scientific Forming Technologies Corporation, is capable of predictably simulating on computer the entire friction stir welding process in its different types.

When setting up the calculation, you must import the tool geometries and define their motion, define the contact surfaces and the relative positions of the workpiece and equipment. When the process criteria has been defined, the numerical friction stir welding simulation can be launched.

The result achieved by the DEFORM simulator makes it possible to assess the extent of joining between the two different material phases in contact one with another.

Lastly, DEFORM provides the welded joint with better quality and therefore gives the component better mechanical strength.

What customers say about DEFORM:

DEFORM Friction Stir Welding simulation software is American and has been optimised to be reliable, quick and easy.
  • EXCELLENT AGREEMENT OF “SOFTWARE RESULTS” WITH “REALITY” DEFORM is the most widely used cold forming simulation software in the world
  •
  • SAMPLING IMMEDIATELY POSITIVE The simulation makes it possible to identify defects obtained during forming, to understand their causes and therefore to undertake the right corrective actions

For the purchase, hire or a DEMO of the software or if you want to take advantage of a simulation service specially-made by our technical department, write or call us at +39 030 3365383
