Heat Treatments of Annealing: What it is
The annealing heat treatment of a metal alloy is a process consisting of heating a piece at a temperature higher than that of austenitizing, followed by a dwell time sufficient to transform it completely into austenite and a slow cooling phase usually in furnace. Annealing makes it possible to achieve a chemical balance by reducing the lower segregation, a structural balance and a mechanical balance with the reduction of internal residual stresses, including hardening.
It is mainly used to prepare steels for subsequent processing stages, making the material more mild and homogeneous, without causing it to break.
Annealing alters the microstructure of the material, causing changes in its properties such as flexibility and hardness. The typical result is the removal of the defects of the crystalline structure. It can also focus on uniforming the chemical composition of the steel. In this case it is heated to higher temperatures and for longer times.
