Riveting: what it is
Riveting is a process by which two elements are joined by means of a tubular, semi-tubular or blind rivet. It allows different materials and components to be joined while ensuring a constant strength.
It is a joint used in machining to join thin metal sheets through their partial overlap, using rivets.
Riveting can be carried out in different ways: riveting of pre-drilled parts, which drills the sheets to be joined and inserts the rivets into the holes; riveting of non-drilled parts, joining the sheets by punching or by driving self-piercing rivets; and ultrasonic riveting, to join sheets of different materials.

Press-in nut assembly
Simulations of three-dimensional assemblies require a robust FEM engine, a mesh generator and multiple-body deformation contact.
This press-in nut simulation represents a widespread commercial application.
For this common automotive application, the deformation of both a sheet and the nut is required.
The plastic deformation contours are shown on the sheet (red is higher) during the nut assembly. In this case, the deformation in the nut was significantly lower than that of the sheet.
SpotFast® inserts
Simulation enables extensive product development before prototypes are built.
The SpotFast® fastening insert creates a press joint in two deformable sheets.
The engineers simulated different pressure profiles, materials and hole sizes.
What customers say about DEFORM
The DEFORM metal riveting simulation software is American and has been optimized to be accurate, fast and simple.
- EXCELLENT ALIGNMENT BETWEEN “SOFTWARE RESULTS” AND “REALITY” DEFORM is the most widely used riveting simulation software in the world.
- SUCCESSFUL SAMPLING RIGHT AWAY Simulation makes it possible to identify the defects produced during riveting, understand their causes and therefore take the right corrective actions.
- START-UP TIMES REDUCED TO MINIMUM The press setup has already been tested in simulation. The real sampling will have the machine set-up sheet already defined and ready to use.
- DEFINITION OF THE REQUIRED PRESS For each station, DEFORM indicates the required tonnage and therefore provides an indication of which machine is needed for the process. Planning of sampling and production.
- INCREASED DIE LIFE Known and reduced tool wear thanks to a modified die mechanics. Die damage phenomena eliminated because they are predicted and therefore resolved in simulation
